Your Money or Your Life
Your Money or Your Life – Transforming your relationship with money and achieving financial independence by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin
Dominguez and Robin believe that our current consumerism is leading to the end of our natural resources. Personally I believe that our current consumerism and our reliance on buying on credit are ruining individual lives. It was evident very early that this book had an environmentally friendly theme.
I did like the way Your Money or Your Life makes you analyze your purpose and find your mission in life. It just seemed to have too much of a cut and run style for me. With family responsibilities, I found it difficult to buy into the whole system, especially if the whole family would not be willing and involved.
The section titled 101 Sure Ways To Save Money has a lot of thought provoking ways to live more frugally. Some are rather extreme, while others make complete sense.
One of the best quotes from the book is “Stop trying to impress other people. Other people are probably so busy trying to impress you that they will, at best, not notice your efforts. At worst, they will resent you for one-upping them”.
Your Money or Your Life is a plan and if followed will help you become financially independent, but it is radical when compared to how most of us live today.
Although very interesting, the book did not change the way I lived or handled money. It will make you think about how you view money and how you spend it.
To boil the book down, it teaches you to increase your income in meaningful work, while at the same time reducing your expenses. Once your income from your invested money can cover your expenses, you are financially independent.
