Spending Fast

What I call a spending fast was introduced to me in a book titled How To Survive Without A Salary .

Although it sounds like a strange idea I think that it could help you in your endeavor to get out of debt.

Similar to an eating fast, a spending fast calls for you to simply quit spending money. Of course, you pay the bills and keep food on the table, but you cut out all unnecessary spending. You buy only what is necessary while you are in the fast.

During this time you will be able to determine wants from needs. This knowledge will aid you in your pursuit to get out of debt since once you end your fast you will likely find that you no longer need some of the things that you previously thought were needs.

The extra money you will now have available can, of course, be used to pay off debt in large chunks. If you are no longer in debt you can put this money into savings or investments.

How long you continue is entirely up to you but I would suggest that anything less than one month is much too short.

I think there is a lot to be learned during a spending fast, give it a try if you seem to never have enough money. You will likely come out with a few extra dollars each month even after the fast has ended.
