Free Credit Report

The Fair Credit Reporting Act entitles everyone to one free credit report from each of the nationwide credit reporting agencies every 12 months. There are currently 3 nationwide credit reporting agencies available. They are Experian, Trans Union and Equifax.

You might ask why a website that doesn't have anything good to say about credit would even want you to bother yourself with a credit check. We are not concerned with high credit scores so that you can run out to get a loan for the latest car models. We just want you to know that you can get three free credit reports per year and that there is important information in these reports.

It isn't uncommon to get your credit report and find that there is a debt showing on your report that you do not owe. You can then take this information and remedy this error.

It is also becoming more common for companies to pull your credit as part of a background check. Whether you feel this is should be happening isn't the discussion here but it is good to know what your report shows before it becomes a problem. I've read that insurance companies are accessing credit reports and even some employers are using them in the hiring process.

The final reason is for those applying for a home mortgage. Once again it is better to know what your report shows before the lending institution even checks, which they most certainly will. If there is a mistake on your credit report you can take care of it ahead of time.

Once you get your report you will have the opportunity to pay a few dollars for a more detailed report but this isn't necessary if you don't have any problems.

Remember, getting your free credit report is a good thing but don't let a good report convince you that you need to run out and get a loan.
